It is insanely naiive to say that a person who has been self destructive their whole adult life can be a Changed Person if they abstain for 6 months. m.gut.bmj.com/content/43/1/140.fullConclusions—Moderate to heavy alcohol consumption occurs in patients transplanted for ALD. Patient recall of abstinence advice is unreliable, and patients return to alcohol mainly within the first year after liver transplantation. Return to alcohol consumption after liver transplantation is associated with rapid development of histological liver injury including fibrosis. Now, please don't judge my man because he only has 4 months sober this go around. 6 months sobriety doesn't define one single person as "cured" from alcoholism. It takes dedication and WORK the rest of their lives.

I do know that a patient can lose all transplant clinic support if he/she begins drinking after transplant.

Listen moonhead. I didn't say start drinking afterward. Please read. I said he can continue afterwards. 6 months prior is not bar far a cured alcoholic. It takes work the rest of their lives. The statistics say that most all transplant recipients start drinking again one year after tp. Then they die. It's a temporary fix for many.

Excuse me - you are so rude. It's not about NOT drinking for 6 months - for 6 months sake - just to get a liver - it's about an alcoholic working the program so alcohol doesn't kill a good liver. There is a shortage of organs - you certainly don't appreciate the idea of transplant as a way of SAVING a life - not as a temporary fix so an alcoholic can then drown another one. I believe that is exactly the point she was trying to make. At this point you need to cut her some slack; and support her. Her husband is on hospice care and she is going thru a range of emotions. This is the only place she has to vent & share, in addition to communicating with me personally. Thank you.
